Lake Claire sits east of Candler Park and west of Decatur, sharing borders with both. The neighborhood took its name from a small spring-fed lake that used to sit at what is now Lake Claire Park, drained in the early 20th century. The streets curve around the topography rather than running on a strict grid, which gives it a quieter, more residential feel than its grid-laid neighbors.
The Lake Claire Community Land Trust runs the small commercial pocket on McLendon, including the long-running Sevananda food co-op nearby and the strikingly idiosyncratic Land Trust gardens. Most daily walking is into Candler Park or up to Decatur.
What makes it different
The quieter intown feel. Lake Claire has less foot traffic than Candler Park or Inman Park. No marquee restaurant strip, no festival weekend. People who buy here are usually trading some commercial density for more privacy.
Larger lots than the grid neighborhoods. Many Lake Claire lots run a quarter to half-acre, larger than what you find one block west in Candler Park. The trade-off is older infrastructure on some streets (sewer, water lines).
What to watch
The Mary Lin school zone line. Most of Lake Claire is zoned for Mary Lin Elementary (the magnet that drives a lot of Candler Park buyer interest), but not all of it. Verify the address with APS before contract.
What it feels like
Lake Claire is the quiet sister of Candler Park, with even more tree canopy and a community land trust that's held common land since 1985. Streets like Hardendorf, Marlbrook, and Wisteria run between McLendon and Ridgecrest, dense with Craftsman and Tudor cottages.
