Buckhead is the northern third of the City of Atlanta and has been the city’s wealthiest district for over a century. The boundaries are loosely the Chattahoochee River to the north, Lindbergh Drive to the south, I-285 to the west, and DeKalb County to the east.
The neighborhood is really three places stitched together. North of West Paces Ferry Road sits Tuxedo Park, Buckhead’s old-money core, with English Tudor and Georgian mansions on multi-acre lots, the Cherokee Town Club, and the Governor’s Mansion. Along Peachtree Road itself is a corridor of high-rise condos, hotels, and the Lenox Square / Phipps Plaza shopping district. South of that, around Garden Hills and Peachtree Hills, is a quieter mix of 1930s cottages and craftsman bungalows at more accessible prices.
Schools are the headline for families: The Westminster Schools, Pace Academy, Lovett, Holy Innocents’. Among Atlanta’s top private schools, all but Marist sit inside or adjacent to Buckhead.
Buckhead does not feel like the rest of intown Atlanta. It’s calmer, leafier, more spread out. Walking to a coffee shop isn’t really a thing here. Cars matter.
