Atlanta Neighborhoods

Atlanta is a city of very distinct neighborhoods. Each one of them having their own character and charm and all together making up a wonderfully diverse city. The residents take great pride in their neighborhoods and they usually have strong neighborhood associations that help maintain and rebuild them. Although all of Atlanta is officially divided into neighborhoods, it is more common to refer to the larger areas of the city in one of these ways: Intown, Midtown, Downtown, and Buckhead/Brookhaven.

Many of the most well know Atlanta neighborhoods are the Intown ones and they are always referred to by their names. Most of these neighborhoods contain popular “destinations”, such as the Zoo in Grant Park, the attractions of Little Five Points shared by Candler Park and Inman Park, the nightlife of East Atlanta Village in East Atlanta, or the shops and restaurants in Virginia Highlands (some other examples are Old Fourth Ward, Cabbagetown, East Lake, Ormewood Park, Edgewood, and Kirkwood, among many others).

Midtown has some very well known neighborhoods and they are more characterized by their housing. Most of these neighborhoods have luxury homes such as the many mansions in Druid Hills, Ansley Park, and Morningside. Many of them are either surrounding Piedmont Park or very close to it. Midtown is also famous for many high rise condos.

Buckhead neighborhoods were commonly referred to all together as Buckhead until Brookhaven was created and became it’s own city in 2012– together they cover the entire northern fifth of the city.

Intown Neighborhoods

These are mostly pre-WWII neighborhoods that contain unique destinations that draw customers from across metro Atlanta. You can find impressive Victorian mansions, popular American Foursquare homes and many Craftsman Bungalows. There is also a selection of new condominiums, lofts and townhomes available. Popular Intown destinations include the Atlanta Zoo, Little Five Points, East Atlanta Village, Ponce City Market, Historic Fourth Ward Park and Skate Park, and the beltline among others.

Midtown Neighborhoods

Midtown is situated between the commercial and financial districts of Downtown to the south and Buckhead to the north. It’s focal point is the expansive greenspace of Piedmont Park, which underwent a major expansion in 2011. The park is surrounded by the Midtown business district to its west, Ansley Park to its northwest, the BeltLine, Morningside, and Virginia Highlandto its east, and the Midtown Historic District to its south. The Atlanta Botanical Garden adjoins the Park.
