Cabbagetown

Once a tight-knit milltown community, Cabbagetown is an Intown Atlanta neighborhood that has a distinct personality all its own. From its humble beginnings in 1881 as a self-contained neighborhood for men, women and children employed by the Fulton Bag and Cotton Mill, one of the first textile processing mills built in the south, Cabbagetown has a history that is rich and compelling. But, it was not until 1977, when the mill permanently closed its doors, that the tiny town that had been named to the National Register of Historic Places was faced with the challenge of what it could become.

Cabbagetown real estateIn the early 1980s, as with many other neighboring areas, Cabbagetown’s identity became directly associated with an influx of artists drawn to a simpler way of life. One of its most notable residents was photographer Panorama Ray, who operated a popular gallery on Carroll Street until his death in 1997. Ray, along with many other artists and residents, worked diligently to make Cabbagetown into an artist and gallery district. It wasn’t until 1995 however, when the Mill was sold for conversion into lofts, that the area saw the renewal and revitalization Ray and others hoped to see. Today the old Fulton Bag and Cotton Mill is a gated community and home to a diverse group of residents that include artists, young professionals and those who appreciate Cabbagetown’s artsy feel that still survives today. With its diverse offering of restaurants that serve as a central neighborhood gathering spot along Carroll Street, The Krog Street Tunnel (the city’s centerpoint for street art), and a unique blend of events including the annual Chomp and Stomp (an annual bluegrass and chili festival that takes place in November), Cabbagetown has become a neighborhood with much to offer.

Located south of Old Fourth Ward, north of Grant Park, west of Reynoldstown and southwest of Inman Park, Cabbagetown neighborhood home styles include farmhouse Victorians, bungalows, early 1900s shotgun-style homes, condos and lofts.
